Antioch, Contra Costa County
Antioch is one of the oldest towns in California. Twin brothers William and Joseph Smith settled on the riverbank in 1850, and at a picnic on July 4, 1851, residents chose the name Antioch after the biblical city. The old downtown still faces the San Joaquin River, where a marina and a riverfront promenade have replaced the wharves.
